Kien Giang Surge in fingerling prices amid rising demand
Fingerling prices in Kien Giang province have risen by approximately 30% compared to the same period in 2024, driven by a sharp increase in demand as farmers prepare for the new aquaculture season.
At hatcheries in Giong Rieng and Kien Luong districts, current prices vary across species: snakehead fish range from 1,000–1,100 VND per fish, while spotted gourami costs 150,000–180,000 VND per kilogram (100–140 fish/kg). Climbing perch is priced at 90,000–115,000 VND per kilogram (140–150 fish/kg), yellow catfish at 110,000–120,000 VND per kilogram (120–150 fish/kg), and kissing gourami at 1,000–1,200 VND per fish (100 fish/kg).
This price increase is mainly due to limited supply struggling to meet rising demand. Le Hoai, a fish breeder in Thanh Hung commune, Giong Rieng district, explained: “Prolonged hot weather has led to higher mortality rates in nurseries. For over a month now, farmers have been actively seeking fingerlings, but availability remains low.”
Another contributing factor is the strong market price of commercial fish. Mai Thi Truc Linh, owner of Tuan Linh Fish Hatchery in Cong Tre hamlet, Kien Binh commune (Kien Luong), reported that since early 2025, her hatchery has sold about 80 million fish fry, double the volume compared to the same time last year. Besides serving customers from Ca Mau and Can Tho City, hatcheries in Cambodia have also significantly increased their purchases this year.
