Tiền Giang: Prices of commercial clams spike
According to Nguyễn Văn Quí, Head of Agriculture and Rural development Office of Gò Công Đông district of Tiền Giang province, prices of commercial clams have spiked recently, leaving farmers a a lot of benefit.
Prices of commercial clams ranged between 25,000 and 27,000 dong/kg, depending on harvest sizes, 5,000 dong/kg higher than the same period last year. With an average output of 15 tons/ha, farmers can earn 370-400 million dong from clams farms at this time.
As evaluated by Agriculture and Rural Development office of Gò Công Đông district of Tiền Giang province, prices of commercial clams sharply increased due to growing demand while short supply. Gò Công Đông, a coastal district of Tiền Giang province, has a 2,200ha clam farming area, mainly in Tân Thành commune which borders the south of Cửa Tiểu rivulet mouth of the Tiền river.
Clams farming has been developed for a long time, creating a lot of jobs and income for poor local farmers. However, the 2020 summer heat and salt intrusion disrupted the production and livelihood of the coastal district.
The pandemic has damaged a large amount of clams farming area, leaving a low output. According to a report by the Agriculture and Rural Development office of Gò Công Đông, only 8,000 tons of commercial clams have been harvested since early this year, down 3,000 tons compared to the same period last year.
The district tries to bring in around 20,000 tons of clams in 2020 to supply local consumption and exports.
