Prices of pangasius material and exporting prices are inching up

As of late October 2020, prices of pangasius size 0.7-0.8 of/pc increased to 21,800-22,500 dong/kg in Đồng Tháp, up from 500-700 dong/kg as compared to the same period last year. Prices of fingerling (sizes 28-35 count fish and 50-60 count fish) increased 22,000-24,000 dong/kg, up 1,000-1,500 dong/kg as compared to mid-October.

According to reports by the Directorate of Fisheries (under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), by the end of September 2020, pangasius farming area has reached 4,968ha in the Mekong Delta, equal to 91% compared to the same period last year. The total output of pangasius in September 2020 is estimated to reach over one million tons, equal to 93.6% compared to the same period last year, with a vast majority of farming area located in Đồng Tháp, An Giang, Cần Thơ, Bến Tre and Vĩnh Long. According to statistics by Đồng Tháp’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development which is the largest pangasius farming area of the country, the province spent 1.840ha of land rearing pangasius and brought in 303,723 tons of this species.

In quarter III of 2020, as demand for imports has not bounce back since the Covid-19 pandemic, some countries had a large amount of unsold stocks while some have ramped up producing pangasius material, making prices fall down and ranged between 18,000-18,500 dong/kg, down from 1,500-2,500 dong/kg compared to the previous quarter.

After a while of reduction, pangasius prices in many parts of the Mekong Delta have inched up from 5,000 to 6,000 dong/kg as compared to the previous two weeks.

In particular, by the end of September 2020, in many districts of Cần Thơ City and auxiliary provinces such as An Giang and Đồng Tháp, prices of pangasius broodstocks size 30-35 pcs/kg ranged between 20,000 and 22,000 dong/kg, while it was 15,000-17,000 dong/kg in the past.

Prices of pangasius broodstocks increased due to a sharp reduction of supply sources due to low prices for a while, making many parts lower their pangasius broodstock production. As of now, many households and companies are in need of buying pangasius broodstocks for a new crop, leaving an increase in purchases and creating favorable conditions for pangasius prices to inch up.
