Cà Mau is tightening their grip on boats docking in and out of all ports to facilitate fishermen to increase the productivity of seafood exploitation so that they will be assured of working on the ocean and protect the territorial waters.
According to the Cà Mau provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, as many as 99% of the local fishing boats have installed Vessel Mornitoring System (VMS), led by the province’s mounting effort in performing solutions to fight against IUU regulations and remove the “yellow card” imposed by the EC.
Even though a majority of fishing boats have installed VMS, a large number of them usually lose connection. Meanwhile, provincial institutes face difficulties in checking and detecting the cause of connection failure, what if it is due to technical error or intention of boat owners themselves.
Thus, the province has tightened its grip on boats docking in and out of all ports to facilitate fishermen to increase the productivity of seafood exploitation so that they will be assured of working on the ocean and protect the territorial waters. Moreover, the province disseminates information about IUU fishing regulations frequently and asks local fishermen to follow them strictly.
The number of local fishing boats violating foreign waters has reduced sharply. This is a good sign for Cà Mau province. Nevertheless, so as to eradicate the fishing boats trespassing foreign waters, the Cà Mau provincial People’s Committee requests authorities to frequently disseminate information about this as well as ask local fishermen to strictly follow regulations in exploitation and definitely not to violate foreign waters.
Besides tightening the management and examination of fishing boats, the provincial People’s Committee requests authorities to strictly punish violated boats that intentionally remove VMS or tamper with connection wire. Fishing boats violating foreign waters will be imposed a heavy penalty, with the highest one being confiscation acts for the purpose of deterrence.
