Tuna exports reach US$1 billion target
In December 2022, Vietnam continued to see a 21% decline in tuna exports as compared to the same period last year. However, the whole year export value reached the goal of USD 1 billion, up 34% from 2021.
Vietnam saw a decline in tuna exports to most of the markets as compared to the same period last year due to global inflation.
According to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, Vietnam’s tuna products have been exported to 99 markets in the world, with the US, EU, CPTPP, Israel, Thailand, Arabia, Russia, the Philippines, and Egypt being the top nine destinations, accounting for 92% of the total export value.
Tuna exports to the US continued to fall 38% in December. However, the accumulated value of tuna exports in 2022 rose by 44% with nearly USD 487 million in value. Meanwhile, tuna exports to country members of FTA showed good signs in December.
After a decline in November, Vietnam’s tuna exports to the EU rose back in the last month of the year, up 29%, reaching nearly USD 15 million worth, leaving the total export value to this market in 2022 of USD 166 million approximately, up 15% from 2021.
Germany, Spain, and Belgium are the three biggest destinations of Vietnamese tuna among the EU countries. In December alone, tuna exports to Germany and Spain increased by 161% and 117% respectively.
After a while of consecutive growth in CPTPP countries, Vietnam saw a 6% decline in tuna exports in December 2022. However, tuna exports to the main markets such as Canada, Japan or Mexico kept rising this month. Noticeable increase in sales was recorded in Japan in the last quarter of 2022. In December alone, tuna exports to this country increased by 131% from the same period last year.
The accumulated value of tuna exports to CPTPP reached nearly USD 136 million, up 48% from 2021.
It is anticipated that such numbers may not remain in the first quarter of 2023 but will recover in the second half of the year. However, the FTA will promote Vietnam’s tuna exports in the first months of the year.
