Vietnam ranks fourth in seafood exports to China

Vietnam ranks as the fourth-largest seafood exporter to China, following Ecuador, Russia, and Canada, with a 6.23% share of China's import market in the first nine months of 2024.

As reported in the mid-November 2024 Agricultural, Forestry, and Fisheries Market Bulletin by the Import-Export Department of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, China’s Customs data shows that seafood imports (HS codes 03, 1604, 1605) totaled USD 12.92 billion in the first nine months of 2024, down 10.8% year-on-year.

Ecuador remains China’s top seafood supplier, with imports totaling USD 2.28 billion, down 18.6% YoY. Russian seafood imports reached USD 1.92 billion, a decline of 11.4% YoY, while imports from Canada stood at USD 1.01 billion, down 1.6% YoY. Together, these three countries contributed USD 5.23 billion, making up 40.4% of China’s total seafood imports in the first three quarters of 2024.

In the first nine months of 2024, Vietnam became the fourth-largest seafood supplier to China, with exports valued at USD 804 million, up 31.7% from the same period last year. In comparison, China spent USD 774 million on seafood from the U.S., a 5.6% decline, while imports from India totaled USD 749 million, down 13%, and from Norway, USD 687 million, a 3.4% decrease.

Among the major seafood import markets, Taiwan (China) saw a significant 604% increase in imports during the first nine months of 2024 compared to the same period last year. In contrast, imports from Peru declined by 70%, while imports from Chile and Australia dropped by 19.2% and 22%, respectively.

In the ASEAN region, aside from Vietnam, China imported seafood worth 719 million USD from Indonesia, reflecting a 23% year-on-year increase. Imports from Thailand totaled USD 309 million, a decrease of 13.6%, while imports from Malaysia amounted to USD 175 million, marking a 24.8% year-on-year decline.
