To fulfill such a high target, Hồ Chí Minh must produce 300 million ornamental fish in 2030
Ornamental fish is one of the top six most traded agricultural product of Hồ Chí Minh city.
Lê Tôn Cường, Deputy Head of Hồ Chí Minh Sub-department of Fisheries said that the city has about 90 ha of ornamental fish farming areas owned by nearly 300 facilities and households.
Ornamental fishes are mainly cultured in glass tanks, liner cement ponds, ponds, pots, and styrofoam boxes.
Cường said that Hồ Chí Minh has about 20 exporters of ornamental fish, with Thien Duc Ornamental Creature Corp, Saigon Aquarium Corporation, and Saigon Aquarium Cooperative on top. The city’s ornamental fishes have penetrated 50 countries in Europe (50-60%), Asia, America, Middle East, and South Africa.
According to the Hồ Chí Minh Sub-department of Fisheries, from 2010 to 2019, the total output of ornamental fishes increased by 15% year after year (from 60 million fishes in 2010 to 205 million fishes in 2019). However, due to the covid-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2022, the output of ornamental fish declined by 50% in 2021 (100 million pcs).
In the first months of 2023, about 37.4 million ornamental fishes were produced in Hồ Chí Minh, down 11.30% from the same period last year of 42.18 million pcs. Over 4.1 million ornamental fish were exported, down 0.5% from the same period last year, bringing in USD 4.2 million worth, up 1.0% from the same period last year.
Europe was the largest importer, accounting for 64.78% of the density, followed by Asia (28.49%), America (5.10%), Middle East (1.28%), and South Africa (0.35%).
Cường said that such a low output was attributed to a halt in production as domestic consumption and exports have not shown any good sign.
