According to statistics by the General Department of Vietnam Customs, in September 2023, Germany purchased nearly $6 million worth of pangasius from Vietnam, marking a 2.5-fold increase compared to the same period last year after three consecutive months of decline.
By the end of September 2023, pangasius exports to Germany reached over $28 million, a y-o-y 32% increase, contributing more than one-fifth to the total Vietnamese pangasius exports sent to the EU. Notably, in September 2023, pangasius exports to this market showed the highest value in the last two years, with a 149% increase compared to September 2022.
Germany mainly imports pangasius products HS code 0304, with $5.5 million worth recorded in September 2023, a 2.5-fold increase from the same period last year. In the first nine months of this year, pangasius HS code 0304 accounted for 97% of the total pangasius exports to this market.
In 2023, despite global disruption and a decrease in consumer demand, many major markets reduced their pangasius imports from Vietnam. However, Germany is still considered a stable market as it has consistently shown positive growth, except for June, July, and August 2023. Nevertheless, according to data from the International Trade Centre (ITC), Vietnam is not yet the largest source for Germany, as Vietnam just accounts for only a small portion of Germany’s total white fish imports from the world. In 2022, Germany consumed nearly $974 million worth of white fish, only $31 million spent on Vietnam, accounting for a 3% share. According to ITC, in the first seven months of 2023, Germany purchased nearly 6,000 tons of Vietnamese pangasius, up 50% from the same period last year.
Vĩnh Hoàn continues to rank as the top Vietnam’s pangasius exporter to Germany, holding over 14% of the market share, followed by Vạn Đức Tiền Giang, Đại Thành, Hùng Cá 2 và GODACO.
In the first half of October 2023, pangasius exports to Germany reached nearly $2 million worth, almost doubling compared to the same period in 2022. As of October 15, 2023, this European country has consumed over $30 million worth of Vietnamese pangasius, a 35% increase compared to the same period in 2022.
