In Tiền Giang province, the price of black tiger shrimp is currently ranging from 120,000 to 225,000 VND/kg, an increase of 6,000 to 10,000 VND/kg compared to the previous month; vannamei shrimp is priced at 82,000 to 118,000 VND/kg, an increase of 9,000 to 15,000 VND/kg compared to the previous month.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tiền Giang province, by mid-February 2024, local farmers had cover over 5,200 hectares of pond with various aquatic species, mainly black tiger shrimp, vannamei shrimp, and clams. Nearly 17,000 tons have been produced.
The Department stated that in 2024, Tiền Giang plans to allocate over 14,700 hectares of water surface area for aquaculture, aiming to produce over 200,000 tons of fishes and shrimp to meet the market demand.
Early this year, the price of shrimp raw materials increased significantly, farmers were so excited. Specifically, the price of black tiger shrimp is currently ranging from 120,000 to 225,000 VND/kg depending on size, an increase of 6,000 to 10,000 VND/kg compared to the previous month; while whiteleg shrimp is priced at around 82,000 to 118,000 VND/kg depending on size, an increase of 9,000 to 15,000 VND/kg compared to the previous month.
Farmer Lê Thành Tăng, in Tân Phú Đông district, who converted 1 hectare of low-yield rice field to a whiteleg shrimp farm, mentioned that whiteleg shrimp can be cultured twice a year using intensive farming methods, with an average yield of 5-6 tons/ha/crop.
According to Tăng, as they are currently in the first crop of the year, the output is not substantial, while market demand during the Tet holiday season is increasing, leading to the rise in shrimp prices.
For coastal areas such as Gò Công Đông and Tân Phú Đông, the province plans to develop improved extensive farms, intensive shrimp farms, integrated rice-shrimp farms, and high-tech farms in 2-3 stages…
In Tân Phú Đông island district, Tiền Giang has planned key shrimp farming areas linked with the development of marine ecotourism.
To cope with challenges of climate change in coastal areas, Tiền Giang has also established a shrimp-rice integrated farming area of about 130 hectares in coastal Phú Tân commune (Tân Phú Đông district), which will be the largest farming are in Tiền Giang province.
Farming one shrimp crop and one rice crop per year, farmers can earn a net profit of 50 million to 70 million VND per hectare.
