Vietnam leads world in ASC-certified pangasius output

Vietnam accounted for all Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC)-certified pangasius production worldwide in 2024, as demand for sustainable farmed fish grows in key export markets.

The country had 58 pangasius farms certified to ASC standards last year, producing about 210,144 tonnes for export to 61 markets. Most shipments went to Europe, including the Netherlands, Germany, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, where environmental, social and food safety standards are strict.

Certified farms in Vietnam save an average of 144 cubic metres of water per tonne of fish, maintain an 88.9% disease-control rate, and 72.4% have standardised sludge treatment systems, according to industry data. Productivity reaches 70.4%, helping reduce costs and improve competitiveness.

Industry officials say the ASC label strengthens the reputation of Vietnamese pangasius and could help the sector maintain and expand market share in premium markets, as global buyers increasingly seek products with strong environmental and social credentials.
