Thai Binh Tien Hai achieves high efficiency in brackish water oyster farming

Tien Hai district leverages its coastal advantages to successfully develop brackish water oyster farming. This model generates high income, improves the environment, and raises local livelihoods.

In recent years, Tien Hai district in Thai Binh province has capitalized on its coastal location to develop brackish water oyster farming, creating a breakthrough in aquaculture and significantly boosting local incomes.

The model was pioneered by Ta Van Thiet seven years ago, who studied oyster farming techniques in Quang Ninh and successfully applied them in the Ba Lat estuary area, where there are currently 1,500 oyster farming rafts. In 2024, production reached 5,000 tons of oyster seed and 2,000 tons of market-sized oysters, generating nearly 2 billion VND in profit.

Locals in Nam Phu commune have also expanded the raft-based oyster farming model, using suspended bamboo racks on the water surface, providing stable income while contributing to water quality improvement due to oysters’ natural filtration capacity.

According to the district’s Agriculture Department, over 2,100 oyster rafts are now operated in the area, with products widely consumed within the province and exported to Quang Ninh and Hai Phong. This farming method carries low risk, requires no antibiotics or chemicals, is environmentally friendly, and benefits from strong local government support in zoning, technical training, and management, fostering sustainable growth of the oyster farming sector.
