Binh Thuan: 1,481 fishing vessels yet to obtain exploitation licenses
Binh Thuan currently has 1,481 fishing vessels that either lack or have expired exploitation licenses. The highest number is in Phan Thiet City, with 491 vessels, followed by La Gi Town with 396, Tuy Phong District with 355, and Phu Quy District with 202.
To accelerate the licensing process and prevent high-risk vessels from violating IUU (Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated) fishing regulations, the Binh Thuan Fisheries Sub-Department launched an urgent plan on March 3 to facilitate the issuance and renewal of fishing licenses across the province.
As part of this effort, the Fisheries Sub-Department has formed four task teams, comprising members from the Fisheries Management Office, the Fishing Vessel Registration Center, and regional Fisheries Inspection Stations. These teams will work closely with seven coastal localities to guide and assist vessel owners in completing their licensing applications.
Based on a detailed review and classification of unlicensed vessels, the Fisheries Sub-Department, in coordination with local authorities, will process license applications from March 3 to March 20.
For vessels on the unlicensed list that are no longer operational due to sinking, dismantling, irreparable damage, or relocation outside the province, the task teams will work with local authorities to verify, categorize, and complete the necessary procedures for deregistration in accordance with regulations.
For vessels sold and transferred to another district within the province, authorities will verify their status and take appropriate action. If the vessel’s new location cannot be confirmed or does not meet the conditions for deregistration, it will be classified as missing, including those sold outside the province.
This initiative aims to ensure compliance with fisheries management regulations and strengthen efforts to combat IUU fishing.
