Quang Ngai imposes seasonal fishing ban to protect coastal marine resources
On October 31, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sở NN-PTNT) in Quang Ngai announced a temporary fishing ban along two coastal areas to support marine biodiversity and resource sustainability.
The restricted zones include a 7.6-hectare area south of Ly Son Island and a 7.4-hectare stretch along the coast of Duc Pho town. The ban is in effect annually from November 1 to November 30 to allow fish populations to recover and mature.
The prohibition targets critical breeding and nursery grounds, supporting efforts aligned with the Government-approved Marine Resource Conservation and Exploitation Plan for 2021-2030, with a vision extending to 2050.
Local authorities are tasked with informing coastal communities, particularly boat owners, captains, and crew members, about these restricted zones. Emphasis is placed on raising awareness to ensure that fishermen comply with the rules, which are designed to promote sustainable livelihoods.
“Violations during the restricted period may lead to administrative penalties or, depending on severity, criminal charges,” said Nguyen Duc Binh, Deputy Director of the Quang Ngai Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The Quang Ngai coastline is home to nearly 1,300 marine species, including 36 endangered varieties. However, unsustainable practices, including the use of electric shocks, explosives, and banned fishing gear, have continued, threatening these resources.
