Vietnam’s seafood industry targets USD 11 billion in exports by 2025

Vietnam’s seafood industry is poised to reach new heights, with a projected export target of USD 11 billion in 2025. Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien expressed optimism about the industry’s potential, building on the impressive USD 10 billion export milestone achieved in 2024.

Despite 2024 being marked by more challenges than opportunities, the seafood sector demonstrated resilience and adaptability. Export value grew by 12.7% compared to 2023, with key products achieving robust growth: shrimp exports reached USD 4 billion, up 16.7%; tuna exports approached $1 billion, up 17%; and pangasius exports totaled USD 2 billion, up 9.6%.

Looking ahead, Phung Duc Tien predicted that Vietnam’s total agricultural exports could surpass USD 62 billion in 2025, with seafood making a significant contribution. However, he also highlighted critical challenges the industry must address, including resolving the EU’s IUU yellow card, adapting to climate change, combating environmental pollution, and overcoming trade barriers.

The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) emphasized that meeting the evolving demands of international markets will be crucial. Exporters must comply with stricter food safety regulations while also demonstrating commitment to environmental and social responsibility.

Sustainability certifications, such as ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council), are now prerequisites for entering major markets, particularly in Europe. These certifications have become standard requirements from buyers and retailers, reflecting the global push toward sustainable consumption.

Additionally, VASEP stressed the growing importance of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles in the supply chain. Businesses must proactively align with these standards, recognizing that they are no longer optional but essential for maintaining market access and competitiveness.

The documentation required for seafood exports is also expanding, with increasing demands for proof of food safety, sustainability, and ESG compliance. As these requirements grow more complex, Vietnamese seafood enterprises must enhance their operational processes and invest in sustainable practices to stay ahead.
