Vietnam, Thailand strengthen cooperation against illegal fishing

On October 9, 2025, Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang paid a working visit to Thailand, where she held talks with Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs Eksiri Pintaruchi and attended a ceremony marking the 80th National Day of Vietnam hosted by the Vietnamese Embassy in Bangkok.

During their meeting, the two officials expressed satisfaction with the positive progress in bilateral relations, especially following the elevation of ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in May 2025. Both sides agreed to step up coordination through mechanisms such as the Joint Cabinet Committee, Joint Commission, and Political Consultations, while expediting the 2026-2030 Action Program and preparing for upcoming high-level visits.

Deputy Minister Hang thanked Thailand for its close cooperation in citizen protection, including assistance in repatriating Vietnamese nationals detained in Myawaddy, Myanmar.

The two sides also discussed cooperation in combating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Hang reaffirmed Vietnam’s strong commitment to implementing EU recommendations, including stricter management of fishing fleets, mandatory installation of vessel monitoring systems (VMS), and enhanced penalties for violations. She called on Thailand to continue sharing information and coordinating on handling violations involving fishing vessels and fishermen, as well as to deepen collaboration in fisheries and maritime management.

Thailand, for its part, welcomed Vietnam’s efforts to combat IUU fishing, shared its experience in marine resource management, and voiced support for promoting sustainable fisheries cooperation between the two countries.

Later that evening, Deputy Minister Hang attended a ceremony marking Vietnam’s 80th National Day (September 2) in Bangkok. The event drew the attendance of Thailand’s Deputy House Speaker, senior officials from Thai ministries and the Senate, members of the diplomatic corps, business representatives, and a large number of Vietnamese expatriates across Thailand.
