USSEC marks 30 years of partnership with Vietnam, eyes sustainable soy solutions for food and aquaculture

HCMC, June 18, 2025 – The U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC) marked its 30-year partnership with Vietnam on Tuesday, highlighting efforts to promote sustainable soy use in food and aquaculture.

The event brought together government officials, business leaders, international organizations, and regional experts to reflect on the growing partnership between U.S. soybean producers and Vietnam, particularly in the animal feed and aquaculture sectors.

Speaking at the event, Timothy Loh, USSEC Regional Director for Southeast Asia and Oceania, acknowledged the growth of Vietnam’s food and aquaculture sectors and reaffirmed USSEC’s long-term commitment to supporting innovation and sustainability in the country.

Vietnam currently ranks as the third-largest importer of U.S. soybeans in Southeast Asia and 13th globally. For the 2023-2024 marketing year, imports are projected to reach 2.2 million metric tons of whole soybeans and 5.9 million metric tons of soybean meal. With consistent quality and strong traceability, U.S. soy is playing an increasingly vital role in Vietnam’s food and aquaculture value chains.

At the event, USSEC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Vietnam Sustainable Agriculture Transformation Office (PSAV) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The agreement aims to deepen technical cooperation and help businesses access high-quality, transparent, and responsibly sourced soy ingredients.

“This MoU reflects our shared commitment to building a modern, sustainable agriculture sector, especially in aquaculture, a key driver of Vietnam’s agricultural exports,” said Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Hoang Trung.

USSEC also highlighted its U.S. Soy Sustainability Assurance Protocol (SSAP), which supports carbon reduction, resource efficiency, and environmental protection in soy production. The SSAP is positioned as a practical tool to help Vietnam accelerate its shift toward sustainable food and aquaculture systems. With nearly 100 million people and a growing middle class, Vietnam is considered a priority market for U.S. soy. Domestic demand for soybean meal alone is expected to reach 6 million metric tons by 2025.

Over the past 30 years, the strategic partnership between U.S. soybean farmers and Vietnamese stakeholders has laid a strong foundation for pursuing shared goals of green growth, circular economy, and food security, driven by globally certified, transparent, and sustainable ingredients.
