Vietnam, South Korea sign pact to boost sustainable offshore aquaculture

Vietnam and South Korea have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen fisheries cooperation, focusing on sustainable offshore aquaculture and investment.

The agreement was signed in Hanoi on Thursday by Vietnam’s Acting Minister of Agriculture and Environment Tran Duc Thang and South Korean Oceans and Fisheries Minister Chun Jae-soo.

Thang said fisheries are a key pillar in Vietnam’s sustainable ocean economy and called for cooperation in modern offshore farming technology, marine plastic waste management, human resource training and seafood trade promotion. He urged South Korean companies to invest in Vietnam’s aquaculture sector under public-private partnership models, noting that South Korea is Vietnam’s largest foreign investor with more than 9,700 projects.

Chun highlighted Vietnam’s marine potential and said Seoul was ready to transfer technology, including artificial intelligence applications in fisheries, and expand training programs. Both sides agreed to deepen collaboration in offshore aquaculture, sustainable fisheries, monitoring and traceability systems to help Vietnam address the European Union’s “yellow card” warning on illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, while boosting trade and investment in 2026–2030.

Vietnam and South Korea elevated ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership after more than three decades of diplomatic relations. Bilateral trade reached USD 82.1 billion in 2024, with seafood accounting for over USD 890 million, including more than USD 800 million in Vietnamese exports.
