Vietnam’s 2025 squid and octopus exports seen topping USD 700 million

Vietnam’s squid and octopus exports are recovering in 2025, with revenue in the first five months reaching nearly USD 274 million, up 14% from a year earlier, according to data from the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

South Korea remained the top destination, importing over USD 100 million worth of squid and octopus, or 36% of total shipments, a 6% increase year-on-year. Most exports were frozen cuttlefish and semi-processed boiled octopus.

Japan followed with imports valued at nearly UsD 69 million, up 19%, driven by stable demand and preference for high-quality products such as sashimi-grade and boiled octopus.

Shipments to China rebounded sharply after a slow start to the year, reaching over USD 26 million, up 2%, amid market reopening and rising demand from the foodservice sector.

Exports to the European Union rose 11% to nearly USD 15 million, with notable increases in Italy, Spain and Belgium. The bloc is now Vietnam’s fifth-largest market for squid and octopus.

Emerging markets including the Philippines, UAE, Cambodia and Canada posted growth of over 40%, reflecting rising demand for mid-range and convenience seafood products.

Vietnam’s squid and octopus exports are projected to exceed USD 700 million this year. To reach this goal, exporters are stepping up investments in processing, traceability and market diversification, while government support remains key to securing raw materials and addressing certification hurdles.
