Vietnam applies IoT in aquaculture

Researchers at the Institute of Information under Technology and the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology have just successfully experimented the system of Automatic Supervision of Water quality parameters in aquaculture based on the Internet of Things (IoT).

Phạm Ngọc Minh, an expert from the Institute of Information and Technology under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and one of the authors of this technology said that aquaculture in the Mekong Delta was facing disease outbreaks, mainly attributed to unqualified water quality. Researchers at the Institute have been researching and developing a solution in which the IoT is applied to automatically supervise some parameters related to water quality during the aquaculture.

In Minh’s opinion, frequent environmental survey in aquaculture areas is important as it helps farmers to monitor the environment automatically and detect bad factors to the grow-out ponds promptly.

With this survey, authorities can easily evaluate the impact of aquaculture against the surrounding environment, hence imposing proper measures.

The IoT has been applied to automatically supervise parameters related to water quality in aquaculture. This system is designed to supervise large-scale aquaculture areas through a wireless sensor, software, and Internet so as to minimize risks and optimize the capacity of aquaculture.

The system involves a measuring counter floating on the water surface so as to automatically collect environmental parameters. The counters are able to handle and gather data before sending them to the server. Each counter works independently or is controlled remotely, and equipped with a solar energy based module. Inox 304 is used to produce the float which can resist the outdoor environment and ocean water. 

The server processes data from measuring counters and sends them to users through a web interface or applications of the Android operating system. All activities are carried out on the Internet.

The system consists of a supervision counter and data collecting counter which are installed on the mainland so as to restore and process data which are sent from independent measuring counters through the LoRa network. The supervision counter uses Module LoRa and module 3G/4G-LTE and sends SMS notifications to managers’ telephones when there is a noticeable parameter.

Minh shares that the Internet of Things is being experimented in Ninh Thuận with good results. This is the first step in developing sustainable hi-tech based agriculture in the future.
