The project “Research for artificial breeding and experimentally culturing commercial Glossogobius sparsipapillus in Quảng Ngãi” was quite successful.

Goby in Trà river has become an icon of Quảng Ngãi. Overfishing of this species has resulted in depletion. According to statistics (2011-2020) by Võ Văn Nha, as many as 6,500 kg of white goby alone are exploited, and about 64,939 kg of goby of all kinds are exploited from Trà Khúc river every year (from Tịnh Giang branch to Cửa Đại).

Gobies are collected from the side of Trà Khúc river, Tịnh Long, Tịnh Khê, Nghĩa Dũng and Nghĩa Dõng communes of Quảng Ngãi city, and brackish water area of 5 – 12‰. Parent gobies are taken to the Đức Phổ experimental breeding station (Quảng Ngãi provincial breed center) for artificial breeding and nursery.

More than two million fingerlings have been produced and 148,000 fries size 2-5cm have been nursed in tanks and ponds. Goby fries are given to two farms in Nghĩa Hà and Nghĩa Phú communes (Quảng Ngãi city) for artificial breeding in freshwater and brackish water ponds.

As a result, 105kg of commercial goby are harvested from brackish water ponds, 11.3gram each while 260kg of commercial goby are collected from freshwater ponds, 9.4gram each. Besides, 28,000 fries are released to the river for rehabilitation in Nghĩa Phú commune.
