Vietnam imported a worth of $699 million of seafood of all kinds in the first five months this year, down nearly 4.2% from last year.
According to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, Vietnam bought a worth of $142.7 million of seafood in May, down 3.4% from the prior month. The accumulated import value of seafood in the first five month reached $698.97 million, down 4.2% compared to the same period last year, accounting for 0.7% of the total of imported goods into the country.
Among top 10 seafood sellers to Vietnam, India is given the first rank with the total seafood importing value accounting for 13.6%, reaching $95.14 million, up 8.3% from last year. The value in May was $22.13 million, up 89.4% from the prior month but down 4.9% from the same period last year. The second seller is Norway with $83.69 million worth, accounting for 12% of Vietnam’s importing value, down 8.5% from last year. The third is Southeast Asia with $74.81 million worth, accounting for 10.7%, down 6% from last year.
In general, Vietnam’s seafood imports saw a plunge in volume in the first five months of 2020, with the slump being recorded in Singapore (reaching $1.1 million, down 82.6%), Ireland ($0.72 million, down 68.2%), and Philippines ($5.13 million, down 37.2%).
However, imports are still elevated in some markets such as Myanmar (reaching $3.68 million, up 179.6%), Malaysia ($5.53 million, up 98.7%) and Poland ($3.69 million, up 40.2%).
