Hue VND 220 billion fishing port inaugurated after multiple delays
After several delays due to the pandemic, contractor limitations, and administrative hurdles, Thuan An Fishing Port in Hue has officially opened.
On February 7, Hue City People’s Committee announced the opening of Thuan An Fishing Port as a Type II port. This makes it the second fishing port in the city, alongside a Type III port, both now certified to accommodate offshore fishing vessels.
The port’s second docking area features a 370-meter-long wharf, a navigation channel depth of -3.4 meters, and a width of 60 meters. The anchorage and waters in front of the wharf reach a depth of -2.6 meters. Covering 5.47 hectares of land and over 13 hectares of water, the port has a minimum cargo handling capacity of 20,000 tons per year and can simultaneously shelter up to 500 vessels measuring over 6 meters, even during storms.
The project’s key infrastructure includes docking berths, access roads, breakwaters, mooring systems, an operations building, fish sorting facilities, technical infrastructure, fresh water supply, wastewater treatment, and dredging of the anchorage and navigation channels.
Construction of the Thuan An Fishing Port and its storm shelter area faced repeated extensions due to the pandemic’s impact, contractor capacity issues, and administrative complications in the port-opening process.
Previously, the old Thuan An Fishing Port, built over a decade ago, had become overcrowded as the number of local fishing vessels surged. Boats returning from offshore had to wait hours for unloading spots. Additionally, large refrigerated trucks struggled to access the wharf, causing delays in seafood collection, processing, and freezing for distribution.
Tran Quang Nhat, Director of Hue’s Fishing Port Management Board, emphasized that the port’s inauguration will significantly boost the local seafood harvesting and processing industry, fostering sustainable growth. It will also serve as a central fisheries logistics hub for vessels from surrounding provinces and cities in central Vietnam.
Nhat added that with the port’s designated functional areas, they plan to attract investment in fisheries logistics services, including fuel supply, fresh water, ice production, fish sorting, freezing facilities, and service kiosks. These services will also cater to tourists interested in experiencing the coastal and lagoon fishing life in Hue.
Moreover, the official operation of Thuan An Fishing Port aligns with European Commission (EC) standards for port management, contributing to Vietnam’s efforts to lift the EU’s IUU (Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated) fishing ‘yellow card’ warning.
