Vietnam pushes for sustainable marine farming solutions

Vietnam’s National Agricultural Extension Center and the Department of Agriculture and Environment in Quang Ninh province on August 29 convened a forum to address challenges in marine aquaculture and promote sustainable development.

At the event, the National Agricultural Extension Center emphasized that marine aquaculture is a key pillar of Vietnam’s maritime economic strategy. New technologies such as HDPE cages, IoT-based environmental monitoring, and disease-free seed production have shown significant benefits, reducing pressure on natural resources and helping protect biodiversity.

According to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment, Quang Ninh has a large marine farming area, where extension models have generated profits 13-20% higher than traditional methods. The province is aiming to expand industrial-scale farming zones linked with eco-tourism and seafood branding.

The Vietnam Marine Farming Association proposed stronger public-private partnerships to mobilize investment and build value chains from production to consumption. Meanwhile, the College of Economics, Technology and Fisheries underlined the urgent need for skilled labor training to support the shift toward modern, technology-driven marine aquaculture.

Participants agreed that sustainable marine farming requires coordinated efforts from central and local authorities, industry associations and training institutions, laying the groundwork for deeper integration of Vietnam’s seafood sector into global markets.
