Dong Thap grants identification codes to 374 pangasius farms
According to a report from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dong Thap province, significant progress has been made in key aquaculture products.
As of the first nine months of 2024, the total area dedicated to pangasius farming in the province reached 2,300 hectares, accounting for 100.9% of the nine-month target and 87.5% of the annual plan. The average production cost was 27,225 VND/kg (down 151 VND/kg year-on-year), with an average selling price of 27,333 VND/kg (down 1,217 VND/kg), yielding an average profit of just 109 VND/kg (down 1,066 VND/kg).
Other aquaculture species were farmed across an estimated 2,700 hectares, achieving 97.5% of the nine-month target and 83.9% of the annual plan. The average production cost for snakehead fish was 36,725 VND/kg, with farmers facing losses of 1,396 VND/kg. Similarly, hybrid catfish showed average production costs of 53,567 VND/kg, yielding profits of 2,175 VND/kg.
The province’s cage aquaculture industry reported an estimated 5,220 cages, fulfilling 100.4% of the nine-month target. Pangasius seed production amounted to 980 million fingerlings, fulfilling 103.2% of the plan.
Currently, 374 pangasius farming establishments, covering 1,623 hectares, have been granted identification codes. Among them, 85 establishments have been certified for food safety standards, while 38 have adopted standards like VietGAP, GlobalGAP, ASC, and BAP.
In the last quarter of 2024, Dong Thap will focus on the restructuring of the pangasius industry and ensure compliance with new regulations across its aquaculture sector, while enhancing quality control and environmental monitoring efforts.
