Developing aquaculture and fishing in Thac Ba Lake: Yen Binh targets 9,200 tons in 2025
Yen Binh district in Yen Bai province has set an ambitious goal of producing more than 9,200 tons of aquatic products from Thac Ba Lake in 2025.
Leveraging the lake’s vast 19,000-hectare water surface, the district has actively welcomed and facilitated investment from enterprises and cooperatives to develop cage fish farming using advanced technologies. This approach has significantly boosted the local economy and improved livelihoods.
Currently, Thac Ba Lake is home to two enterprises, five cooperatives, 13 collaborative groups, and over 300 households engaged in cage and net-enclosed fish farming. Commonly farmed species include hemibagrus, red tilapia, tilapia, bagridae, catfish, and silver carp. The district’s annual aquatic output now exceeds 8,500 tons.
For 2025, Yen Binh plans to maintain approximately 800 hectares for aquaculture and fishing, targeting a stable system of 2,500 fish cages. The district aims to produce over 9,200 tons, with aquaculture contributing 8,000 tons and wild capture about 1,200 tons. The sector is expected to achieve an annual growth rate of 1.8 – 2% in production value, making up 19–20% of the total agricultural output.
To reach these goals, the district plans to integrate multiple funding sources and promote socialized investment from organizations and individuals. Priorities include infrastructure for fish hatcheries, intensive and super-intensive farming practices, and locally tailored aquatic feed production.
Yen Binh will also continue working with the Vietnam Cooperative Alliance and the provincial alliance to expand cooperative networks and community-managed fisheries. The district will further develop value chains and product linkage networks while zoning aquaculture areas into commercial production clusters for high-value processing.
