Can Tho: Pangasius fingerling prices see continuous fluctuations

Currently, the price of pangasius fingerlings ranges from 29,000 to 33,000 VND/kg, up approximately 1,000 VND/kg compared to the same period last year. At certain times, prices fell to as low as 21,000–23,000 VND/kg due to a decline in the raw pangasius market.

According to the Can Tho Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD), the city’s pangasius farming area covers more than 620 hectares, with 430 hectares already harvested, producing over 136,000 tons, an increase from the same period last year. The farming areas are following VietGAP standards.

Pham Truong Yen, Deputy Director of DARD Can Tho, reported that the city’s pangasius fingerling production area is now over 261 hectares, down compared to the same period last year. Of this, 209 hectares have been harvested, yielding more than 2,000 tons. The city has produced over 146 million fingerlings and 476 million fry. Currently, Can Tho’s fingerling production facilities meet about 30% of the local demand for fry (2 billion fry per year) and 90% of the demand for fingerlings (280 million fingerlings annually).

Yen also noted that the price of pangasius fingerlings has seen significant volatility in recent months, ranging from 21,000 to 37,000 VND/kg. At some points, prices dropped to 21,000 – 23,000 VND/kg due to decreases in the raw pangasius market. At present, prices range between 29,000 and 33,000 VND/kg, about 1,000 VND/kg higher than the same time last year. Fingerlings sized 30 fish/kg are priced between 29,000 – 31,000 VND/kg, while those sized 70 fish/kg are priced between 31,000 – 33,000 VND/kg.

DARD Can Tho also announced that three local breeding facilities have registered to receive 2,200 high-quality broodstock from the Research Institute for Aquaculture II, aimed at improving growth and disease resistance traits to support commercial pangasius farming from 2026 to 2030.

Regarding breeding production management, Yen shared that the Department of Agriculture has ramped up its efforts in overseeing pangasius fingerling production, strengthening the implementation of the Fisheries Law, and conducting sector-specific inspections. Currently, the city has certified 12 fingerling production and nursery facilities that meet food safety standards, including 7 breeding facilities and 5 nurseries. As of now, Can Tho has around 8,000 high-quality broodstock, sufficient to meet the city’s breeding needs.
