Ninh Thuan to develop a high-tech lobster farming zone

Southern province Ninh Thuan is drafting a plan to establish a high-tech aquaculture area, designating around 350 hectares exclusively for lobster farming.

On November 19, the Ninh Thuan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development announced that the provincial People’s Committee had approved the framework and budget for creating a development plan for marine aquaculture zones in Ninh Thuan Province through 2030, with a vision extending to 2050. The plan aims to establish a legal framework, digitize aquaculture zones, and integrate high-tech marine farming with wind energy development, fostering investment and ensuring the effective management of aquaculture areas.

The project will be carried out in the high-tech intensive aquaculture zone (C1) and the high-tech marine farming zone integrated with wind power development (C2), both located in Nhon Hai Commune, Ninh Hai District.

Dang Kim Cuong, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ninh Thuan Province, stated that according to the province’s development plan for the 2021–2030 period, with a vision toward 2050, over 2,000 hectares have been allocated for deep-sea farming. “The agricultural sector will focus on high-tech marine aquaculture, prioritizing species such as lobsters, barramundi, golden pompano, and grouper,” he said.

Cuong further shared that the province is finalizing a marine farming project aimed at reducing wild catch. Companies and individual households involved in aquaculture in the area will be assigned identification codes to help establish supply chains and enhance the value of seafood products.

According to the plan, the high-tech lobster farming area covers approximately 1,300 hectares with HDPE cage systems. The cages, with a circumference of around 50 meters, are arranged in clusters of 5-10 cages. Of this, the area dedicated to lobster farming spans about 350 hectares. Farmer Nguyen Ky Thuyet said that his 600 lobster cages are part of a specialized farming plan. He believes the marine area is well-suited for lobster cultivation, with few diseases. Additionally, Thuyet mentioned that his farm supplies around 15-20 tons of lobster to the market each month.

Ninh Thuan Province has also planned the development of the An Hai high-tech aquatic seed production zone and the Son Hai high-tech shrimp broodstock production zone for the period 2021-2030.”

According to the plan, The An Hai high-tech aquaculture area in An Hai commune, Ninh Phuoc district, covers 168 hectares, while the Son Hai high-tech shrimp broodstock production area in Phuoc Dinh commune spans 37.7 hectares. In 2024, Ninh Thuan’s agricultural production is projected to generate over 14,300 billion VND, with the fisheries sector contributing more than 8,160 billion VND. Aquatic breed production is expected to exceed 45.1 billion juvenile shrimp, and total seafood production is estimated at over 12,800 tons, including spotted babylon snails, lobster, and various fish species.
