Gia Lai: Giant river prawns farm gives profit more than twice as much as conventional fish farming
On July 28, the Phú Hiện district People’s Committee of Gia Lai province together with the Nong Lam University to summarize the intensive farming model of all male giant river prawns in ponds.
The intensive farming model of all male giant river prawns in ponds has been experimented since December 2022 in a 9,000 m2 pond owned by four households in Ayun Hạ, Ia Ake, Ia Sol and Ia Peng communes. Nearly 442 million dong was spent, with 315 million dong funded by the Government and over 126 million dong from local residents.
After seven months of deploying, giant river prawns are evaluated to be suitable with the local conditions. As many as 2,950 kg prawns were harvested, shrimps weighed up to 45 grams each on average. With the price of 220,000 dong/kg, after product costs, farmers earned 31.1 million dong profit per 1,000 m2 of the surface water, 2.5 times more than what earned from conventional species such as carp, tilapia, grass carp and mud carp.
Such a successful model not only brings in economic efficiency but also changes the thought of local households in applying technologies into aquaculture. This is the basis for the district to multiply the model in the future so as to promote the local potential and advantage and turn Phú Thiện into a seafood supplier of the province and the Highlands.
