Vietnam exports over 90 thousand tons of pangasius fillet to the US
The frozen pangasius fillet accounted for 87% of the total export value of pangasius to the US. As estimated, Vietnam has exported about 94 thousand tons of frozen pangasius to the US.
Pangasius exports slightly recovered in August after a slump in July 2022. Vietnam achieved USD 33 million from exporting pangasius to the US, up 45% from the same period last year. According to VASEP, this number did not reflect a positive sign because August 2021 was the time of a disastrous slump in pangasius exports amidst the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. The revenue of pangasius going to the US in August was just a little higher than the USD 32 million worth of July.
In August 2022, exports of frozen pangasius fillet accounted for 87% of the total export value of this species to the US. As many as 90 thousand tons of frozen pangasius fillet were sold in the US market. The average exporting price remained at 5 USD/kg in August. However, after noticeable sales were recorded from March to May with 13.5-16 thousand tons per month, pangasius exports to this market started to slow down in June, continued to fall to the lowest value in July and then slightly recovered in August.
According to statistics by the US Department of Agriculture, the US imported 95.4 thousand tons of frozen pangasius in the first seven months of the year, valued nearly USD 403 million, up 35% in volume and 106% in value as compared to the same period last year. As many as 88.2 thousand tons of frozen Vietnamese pangasius were exported to this market, valued at USD 371 million, up 34% in volume and 109% in value as compared to the same period last year. Vietnam accounted for over 92% of the total frozen pangasius imported into the US market, in both volume and value.
As estimated, about 6.7 thousand tons of frozen Vietnamese pangasius were exported to the US in August, higher than that in July but much lower than earlier this year.
