Vietnam rises to become Brazil’s second-largest seafood supplier

Brazil significantly increased its seafood imports from Vietnam in 2024, with a 53.8% rise in volume and a 38.6% growth in value, reaching 50.5 thousand tons worth USD 136.6 million.

According to data from the International Trade Centre (ITC), the Import-Export Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade reported that Vietnam ranked as Brazil’s second-largest seafood supplier in 2024. Vietnam accounted for 17.33% of Brazil’s total seafood import volume and 8.69% of its import value.

In 2024, Brazil boosted seafood imports from several key markets, including Chile, China, Argentina, Ecuador, and the United States. Notably, imports from Vietnam experienced strong growth, increasing by 53.8% in volume and 38.6% in value compared to 2023, reaching 50.5 thousand tons worth USD 136.6 million.

Statistics from the General Department of Customs (Ministry of Finance) show that in February 2025, Vietnam’s seafood exports reached USD 655.02 million, marking a 44.5% increase from February 2024. Cumulatively, in the first two months of 2025, Vietnam’s seafood exports totaled USD 1.42 billion, reflecting a 19% rise compared to the same period in 2024.

China, Japan, and the United States continued to be Vietnam’s top three seafood export markets, collectively accounting for 52.33% of total export revenue in the first two months of 2025. Exports to these key markets all saw growth compared to the same period in 2024.

Exports to other major destinations, including South Korea, Australia, Thailand, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Russia, and Brazil, also recorded positive growth year-over-year. Looking ahead, Vietnam’s seafood exports are expected to maintain their upward trajectory, supported by increasing global demand.

The first two months of 2025 brought encouraging results for Vietnam’s seafood export industry, with total revenue reaching USD 1.423 billion, an 18.2% increase compared to the same period in 2024. February 2025 alone recorded USD 655.197 million in exports, representing an impressive 42.6% growth.

Shrimp remained the standout product, generating USD 542.387 million in export revenue during the first two months of the year, a 30.8% increase. In February 2025, shrimp exports reached USD 231.406 million, up 33.9%. Meanwhile, pangasius exports totaled USD 253.241 million over the same period, experiencing a slight 0.8% decline. Tuna exports amounted to USD 126.481 million, down 3.5%, though February 2025 saw an increase of 15.9%, reaching USD 59.986 million.

Several other seafood categories showed strong growth potential, including various fish species (USD 302.783 million, up 13.6%), squid and octopus (USD 101.009 million, up 13.8%), bivalve mollusks (USD 39.089 million, up 121.6%), and crabs (USD 62.762 million, up 86.1%).
