Bạc Liêu converts salt farm to Artemia

The Mekong Delta province of Bạc Liêu’s agricultural department will plan to convert 500 – hectare salt farm to Artemia (brine shrimp) which aims to provide live hoods to salt farmers who are facing uncertain future.

Bạc Liêu province contains 1,800 hectares of salt fields mostly in Đông Hải district. Salt farming area has decreased compared to previous crop due to salt farmers is converting thier salt fields to fish farm or Artemia farm. Salt Production Co-operative in Doanh Điền hamlet takes the initiative in converting their 40 hectare salt fields to artemia farm. Bạc Liêu province aims to convert 500/1,800 hectares salt fields to Artemia farm by 2020, according to local authorities. This province has developed Artemia farming model for some years which earns a higher profit than salt farming. However, the converting process is very slowly with 281 hectares Artemia farm.
