Dong Thap restructures pangasius sector for sustainable growth

The southern province of Dong Thap is accelerating the restructuring of its pangasius industry to increase value and promote sustainable development.

In the first half of 2025, Vietnam’s pangasius output reached over 871,900 tonnes, up 4.5% year-on-year, while export revenue rose 11% to USD 1.023 billion. Dong Thap remains a key contributor, accounting for roughly 35% of both national production and export value.

Under its 2025 plan, the province aims to expand pangasius farming to 2,640 hectares, targeting a production volume of 555,000 tonnes valued at more than VND 9 trillion (around USD 385 million), with exports exceeding USD 980 million. To achieve these goals, Dong Thap is implementing a comprehensive strategy: digitizing identification codes for all farms, ensuring all facilities meet safety production standards, and applying Good Aquaculture Practices (GAP) to about half of the farming area. More than 75% of commercial fry will undergo quality control under a three-tier breeding program, supported by cooperation between hatcheries, cooperatives, and individual farmers.

The Dong Thap Department of Agriculture and Environment highlights the province’s focus on environmental monitoring and digital transformation in operations. Meanwhile, the Vietnam Pangasius Association encourages stronger value chain integration, modernization of farming techniques, adoption of advanced technologies, and higher certification standards to improve resilience to climate change. Through these initiatives, Dong Thap is reinforcing its position as a leading hub, strengthening Vietnam’s pangasius sector in global markets.
