Khanh Hoa to develop sustainable fisheries
Khanh Hoa province, a key player in Vietnam’s marine economy, is leveraging its strengths in fishing and aquaculture to achieve sustainable growth. With a target of surpassing USD 1 billion in seafood exports by 2045, the province is implementing comprehensive strategies to modernize and innovate its fisheries sector.
Capitalizing on marine potential
As one of Vietnam’s major fishing hubs, Khanh Hoa boasts a fleet of over 3,400 vessels, including 643 equipped for offshore fishing. Its aquaculture area spans 4,310 hectares, supporting diverse farming operations. By the end of 2024, the province expects a total seafood output of 125,750 tons, a 4.3% increase from 2023, with aquaculture production growing by 21%.
Guided by the Politburo’s Resolution No. 09, Khanh Hoa is prioritizing environmentally friendly, high-tech marine aquaculture and fisheries logistics. This approach aims to modernize the sector, enhance productivity, and meet international market standards while safeguarding marine ecosystems.
Focusing on sustainability
Efforts to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing have shown positive results. The province is also shifting from traditional coastal aquaculture to high-tech offshore farming using durable HDPE cages. This transition aims to reduce overfishing, ensure a steady supply of raw materials for processing, and meet global sustainability demands.
To further boost value, Khanh Hoa is investing in advanced processing technologies to create high-value seafood products for export and domestic markets. A phased plan to expand high-tech aquaculture to 240 hectares by 2029 reflects the province’s commitment to innovation and climate adaptation.
Collaborative efforts and future goals
Khanh Hoa is enhancing infrastructure, fostering international partnerships, and supporting fishermen in adopting sustainable practices. Policies include transitioning from environmentally harmful fishing methods and upgrading traditional cages to advanced systems.
With these initiatives, Khanh Hoa is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable fisheries development, contributing to Vietnam’s long-term seafood industry growth.
