Quang Ninh: Successful hatchery rearing of oyster seed in Van Don
After significant efforts, 300,000 oyster seeds reared by the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center in the mollusk production zone of Lo Ho, Van Yen Commune, Van Don, have met the required standards for distribution to mollusk farmers in the province.
The seeds were produced and reared with techniques ensuring their suitability for commercial farming. In early December 2024, the first batch of oyster seeds was sold to mollusk farmers in Van Don District by the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center.
Trac Van Lan, a mollusk farmer from Quan Lan Commune, Van Don District, shared: “I just purchased 150,000 reared oyster seeds from Lo Ho. The seeds here are advantageous as they are well-suited to the water conditions in Van Don’s sea areas, enabling good growth and development in commercial farming. Transporting the seeds is also convenient and ensures their health, reducing costs compared to sourcing them from Nam Dinh as we did before.”
Nguyen Chi Thanh, Head of the Practice and Technology Transfer Station under the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, explained: “After more than 10 days of rearing, the oyster seeds have reached grade 2 size, making them eligible for distribution to commercial farmers. The reared mollusk seeds in the specialized mollusk production zone in Van Don are highly adaptable to the local water environment.”
Currently, Van Don District has a demand for 10 million mollusk seeds annually, but local supply only meets 5% of this demand. The successful hatchery rearing of mollusk seeds is a crucial step toward achieving Quang Ninh Province’s goal of producing 1.5 billion mollusk seeds annually to supply both local and national markets.
Phan Thanh Nghi, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, stated: “Upon being assigned this task, the unit successfully researched and completed the rearing of the first batch of mollusk seeds for the market. This is the Center’s initial distribution, and we will continue to direct and enhance its activities to fulfill the established goals while efficiently utilizing the water surface and infrastructure investments.”
Quang Ninh’s agricultural sector aims to successfully produce and rear 1 million oyster seeds by the end of 2024 at the mollusk production zone in Van Don. This will serve the farming needs of local fishers, contributing to the promotion of marine aquaculture after Typhoon No. 3 and supporting sustainable farming practices.
