Thousands of households in coastal districts of Trà Vinh province continue to expand the model of mảngove – shrimp culture, paying attention to black tiger shrimp. Not only does this model assure sustainable efficiency, but also it protects the environment in the face of climate change.
According to the Trà Vinh provincial department of Agriculture and Rural development, the province has nearly 6,000 ha used for planting mangrove and stocking black tiger shrimp in combination with rearing natural fish and mud crab, up about 200 ha as compared to 2021. As many as 5,120 ha of land was handed over to local farmers by the province and another 4,000 ha of mangrove has been planted for seafood production by themselves for the last five years.
Head of the Office of Agriculture and Rural development of Duyên Hải district Trần Quốc Đoàn said that the district had more than 1,000 households related to the model of mangrove-shrimp-fish culture with the total farming area of over 865 ha. This model has left no worries of disease outbreak, can be exploited all over the year, and brings in a net profit up to 100-120 million dong/ha/year.
Farmer Huỳnh Văn Tài in Long Vĩnh commune of Duyên Hải district has been conducting the mangrove-shrimp model for over five years. He dug a grow-out pond and planted mangroves on the land of 4 ha, with the ratio of 40% of mangrove and 60% of surface water so as to provide shade and home for shrimps and other aquatic species.
He buys and stocks about 50,000 black tiger shrimp and 6,000 mud crab every year. As the feed cost is low, he earns over 350 million dong income annually. Besides, he stocks Geloina coaxans in the mangrove area and earns tens of million dong every year. Tài added that the price of black tiger shrimp and mud crab is always 20% higher than those harvested from intensive farms.
Deputy Director of Trà Vinh provincial department of Agriculture and Rural Development Trần Văn Dũng said that the mangrove – seafood farming model has been encouraged and the province has issued policies to support local farmers.
He added that the province set a target of having another 800 ha of mangrove by 2025, leaving the total mangrove area up to 10,000 ha.
