Trà Vinh Over 60% of shrimp farmers earn profit from the 2022 crop
According to Trà Vinh provincial Sub-department of Fisheries, the 2022 crop of black tiger shrimp and white leg shrimp ended in coastal areas of Cầu Ngang, Châu Thành, Duyên Hải, Trà Cú districts and Duyên Hải town in early November.
According to the Trà Vinh provincial Sub-department of Fisheries, the province has about 20,000 households conducting 2-3 shrimp crops, covering nearly 30,000 ha with nearly 1,100 ha under high-density intensive practice. The total shrimp farming area exceeds nearly 1,400 ha from 2021. The province has over 60% of shrimp households, equal to 11,900 households, earning profits.
That shrimp crop was carried out under favorable conditions, the province said. Earlier this year, acknowledging optimal salinity level in large rivers around coastal districts, farmers had ponds cleaned and qualified post larvae carefully selected. Most of the shrimp ponds are equipped with safe technical processes, thus, black tiger shrimps and white leg shrimp are protected from water pollution and disease outbreaks.
However, in the second and third crop, white leg shrimp farmers had to face constant rains which stirred the water environment in grow-out ponds. Moreover, the difference between day and night affected the health of shrimps, leaving the damage of nearly 1,930 ha of black tiger shrimps and 1,243 ha of white leg shrimp, with over 2,500 households suffering. Most of the semi-intensive and intensive shrimp ponds with poor technical processes were damaged.
Farmers operate high-density intensive ponds of black tiger shrimp and hi-tech based super intensive ponds of white leg shrimp all have mastered the farming technique and have engaged these models for 3-4 years. The productivity from hi-tech based super intensive ponds reached 45 tons/ha on average.
Shrimp farmers are earning high profits from black tiger shrimp and white leg shrimp that are sold at 120,000 – 140,000 dong/kg (size 45-50 pcs/kg). The hi-tech based super intensive ponds of white leg shrimp bring in about 1-1.2 billion dong/ha/crop, five times as much as traditional semi-intensive or intensive ponds.
