Vietnam distributes high-yield tilapia to boost northern aquaculture

On June 16, 2025, Vietnam’s National Agricultural Extension Center delivered high-quality tilapia 78 fingerlings to farmers in Tam Ky Commune, Kim Thanh District, Hai Duong Province. The initiative marks a key step in applying improved breeds to enhance aquaculture productivity in northern Vietnam.

Tilapia 78, an imported strain, is known for its fast growth, strong disease resistance, and adaptability to local pond conditions. Alongside fingerling distribution, the program also provides farmers with technical training in fish farming, disease prevention, and feed formulation, part of broader efforts to restructure production and increase rural incomes.

Trial results indicate the fish can reach 1.5-2 kg within 5-6 months, with yields rising 20-30% compared to older strains. The fish’s firm, low-bone flesh meets consumer preferences, offering strong market potential.

Participating households also receive technical guidance and product off-take commitments at prices 3–5% higher than market rates. Hai Duong’s Department of Agriculture and Environment plans to scale up the model and attract private sector partners to strengthen value chain linkages.

Authorities plan to expand the model and attract private partners to strengthen the aquaculture value chain and promote export-oriented production.
