Kien Giang – Shrimp output soars with high-tech farming revolution

Kien Giang's shrimp industry has more than doubled its output in just five years, driven by the adoption of high-tech, intensive farming methods. Yields jumped from 8.4 to 12.6 tons per hectare, while total production surged from 31,000 to 63,000 tons annually.

Between 2020 and 2025, the province’s total aquaculture area expanded significantly, from over 270,000 hectares to 325,000 hectares, while total output surged from 264,000 tons to more than 410,000 tons. Notably, brackish water shrimp farming now accounts for approximately 137,000 hectares, yielding 155,000 tons.

The area dedicated to intensive and semi-intensive shrimp farming grew from 3,685 hectares to 5,000 hectares. By 2030, the province targets expanding this to 6,370 hectares, aiming for an output of 78,480 tons, equivalent to around 50% of its total shrimp production.

This remarkable progress is driven by a strong transition from traditional to industrial farming practices, leveraging advanced technologies such as Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), Biofloc, semi-Biofloc, multi-phase farming, probiotics, and IoT-based monitoring systems. Many farms have obtained certifications including VietGAP, GlobalG.A.P., BAP, and ASC, and are equipped with farm codes and traceability systems to meet stringent export standards.
