Bình Định: Apply UFB technology into ocean tuna preservation

The Bình Định provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development requests the Sub-department of Fisheries to work with relevant institutes to carry out an experiment of preserving ocean tuna with the Ultra Fine Bubble (UFB) technology, so as to gradually execute the project of supply chain and consumption of ocean tuna in Bình Định.

Ocean tuna accounts a large density of Bình Định’s aquatic exploitation. The province has 3,200 offshore fishing vessels, nearly 1,500 of which are specialized in catching ocean tuna. In the first three months of 2022 alone, the output of wild-caught ocean tuna reached 3,265 tons, up 19.3% from the same period last year.

Determining ocean tuna as a key product in the province’s seafood exploitation and processing, the local Agricultural sector has paid attention to invest into and enhance the quality of ocean tuna for years as well as push up the selling prices, help fishermen increase their income, and meet the demand for exports.

As for the period 2021-2025, the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development requests the Sub-department of Fisheries and the Center of Agriculture Extension to work together to select qualified fishing vessels for experimenting the preservation of ocean tuna with UFB technology. Thirty owners will be intentionally assigned to carry out the experiment with 40% of the cost being given to each, equal to about VND 40 million which will be spent on the machine and cold storage room.

In quarter II of 2022, the Sub-department of Fisheries worked with the Center of Agriculture Extension to select two qualified fishing vessels that will be instructed with techniques and transferred the UFB technology.

Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Trần Văn Phúc said that as for a 15-25 trip, the traditional method of ocean tuna preservation will reduce the quality of the fish, resulting in low prices. So, the new method UFB will increase the quality of products and help fishermen to be more responsible when working at sea.

According to fishermen Nguyễn Văn Trạng, owner of an ocean tuna fishing vessel in Tam Quan Bắc of Hoài Nhơn town, the UFB technology helps fishermen preserve ocean tuna for a long time and keep the fish always fresh.
