Canned tuna exports return to growth

While exports of frozen tuna meat/loin have fallen since earlier this year, exports of canned tuna products are in an upward trend. According to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, Vietnam’s canned tuna exports reached over USD 135 million, up 2% y-o-y.

Vietnam’s canned tuna products have been sent to 68 markets, with the top three being the US, Germany and Israel that account for over 50% of the total export value of this category.

A 45% increase in sales was recorded in the US in July after declining continuously in the first five months of the year.

Meanwhile, exports of canned tuna to the EU rose, with Germany and the Netherlands being the top buyers, rising by 45% and 170% respectively. Exports of this category to Italy are marked with an increase by 421%.

Likewise, exports of canned tuna to Israel rose by nearly 200% as compared to the same period last year.

Besides traditional markets, exports of Vietnamese canned tuna products to Korea and Chile skyrocketed in the first seven months of the year, respectively by five times and twice as much as the same period last year.
