The Netherlands tops Vietnamese pangasius consumption in the EU market

According to data from Vietnam Customs, Vietnamese pangasius exports to the EU reached USD 7 million in the first half of October 2024, a 27% increase compared to the same period last year. As of October 15, 2024, cumulative exports to this market totaled over USD 134 million, representing a slight decline of 0.01% year-on-year.

In the first nine months of 2024, the export value of frozen pangasius fillets to the EU exceeded USD 120 million, a 1% decrease compared to the same period last year, accounting for 94% of the total. Exports of other dried and frozen pangasius products (such as swim bladders, portions, whole fish, etc.) to the EU amounted to over USD 5 million, reflecting a 1% increase. Meanwhile, exports of value-added pangasius products totaled USD 2.6 million, a 6% decline compared to the same period in 2023.

The average export price of Vietnamese pangasius to the EU in the first nine months of this year remained below USD 3 per kilogram, showing negative growth in all months compared to the same period in 2023. In September 2024, the average export price to the EU decreased by 13% year-on-year, falling to USD 2.30 per kilogram. May 2024 recorded the highest price during this period at USD 2.55 per kilogram, a 5% decline compared to the same month last year.

The export volume of pangasius in the first three quarters of this year has been declining. In February 2024, exports to this market dropped to just over 3,000 tons, a 34% decrease from February 2023. Since March, exports to the EU have steadily decreased, reaching nearly 6,000 tons in September 2024, a 3% increase year-on-year.

The Netherlands remains the largest importer of tra fish in the EU. In August 2024, exports to this market reached a record high of over USD 4.4 million, marking a 27% increase. In Q3 2024, tra fish exports to the Netherlands totaled nearly USD 13 million, up 20% from the same period last year. By the end of September 2024, exports to this densely populated European country amounted to USD 36 million, a 2% increase compared to the same time in 2023.

Apart from the Netherlands, Vietnam’s pangasius exports to several EU markets showed positive growth in the first nine months of this year. These markets include Lithuania (+232%), Ireland (+227%), Italy (+163%), Poland (+138%), Spain (+133%), Slovenia and Belgium (+123%), and Hungary (+116%), among others. At the same time, some countries experienced a decline in imports of Vietnamese pangasius, such as Finland (-89%), Latvia (-66%), Slovakia (-39%), and Denmark (-28%).

The export of pangasius to the EU fluctuates from month to month. As the year comes to a close, exports to this market are expected to gradually rise due to the increasing demand for goods in preparation for the holidays. Enterprises should take advantage of this period by increasing their inventory and actively promoting their products to boost exports to the EU market.
