Tilapia prices double in Tra Vinh on strong U.S. demand

Tilapia prices in the southern province of Tra Vinh have doubled year-on-year on surging U.S. demand, lifting farm-gate rates from VND15,000 to VND36,000 per kilogram, bringing profits of up to VND10,000 (US$0.39) per kilogram for local farmers.

Harvesting is underway in Cau Ngang, Tra Cu, and Chau Thanh districts, where farmers grow tilapia alongside whiteleg shrimp in integrated ponds. With input costs deducted, profits are averaging VND10,000 per kilogram.

Farmers stock about 10 fish per square meter, harvesting them at 700–750 grams after five months. The fish are hardy and disease-resistant, and also help improve pond conditions by consuming waste feed and limiting bacterial growth.

Tra Vinh currently has 106 hectares of export-oriented tilapia farms, plus 60 hectares managed by Cuu Long Seafood Corporation.

Over 2,300 households have received official certification for aquaculture practices, mainly in Duyen Hai district, Cau Ngang, Tra Cu, and Chau Thanh, according to provincial authorities. Officials urge farmers to use quality fingerlings, follow recommended protocols, and join integrated supply chains to access broader markets.
