D-Fisheries works with IUCN about project GEF7 to enhance biodiversity conservation and sustainable fisheries development
D-Fisheries (DoF) worked with representatives of International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) about enhancement of biodiversity conservation and sustainable fisheries development in within the scope of project GEF 7 at the end of September.
Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) told IUCN about their proposal of setting up a plan within the scope of project GEF7 and suggested it should be submitted to the GEF Secretariat soon. Accordingly, IUCN has teamed up with MONRE and DoF to run the project to enhance biodiversity conservation and sustainable fisheries development by coastal area management in combination with marine protected area management.
While some legal documents have been approved and become effective soon, especially Fisheries Law2017 and Law on Planning 2017 and regulations on marine conservation and marine exploitation conservation are overlapping; IUCN supposed this is the right time to carry on some trials to enhance the management of Vietnam’s marine protected area network and integrate coastal area management and marine protected area into marine spatial management. The project aims to limit and control illegal exploitation, restore quantity and conserve biodiversity. It presents some activities which are supposed to be implemented by central and local authorities; especially some trials should be carried out in significant marine protected areas where biodiversity is paid high attention under the coordination and management of MONRE and Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
