Da Nang prepares for European Commission’s IUU inspection visit

The Chairman of Da Nang People's Committee has directed local agencies, departments, and organizations to urgently implement key measures to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing ahead of the European Commission (EC) inspection. These tasks must be carried out with urgency, efficiency, and effectiveness before the inspection.

The city has instructed agencies such as the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD), Department of Information and Communications, Border Guard Command, City Police, and local governments overseeing fisheries to assign one leader to directly manage and monitor IUU control activities. Agencies are also required to recognize and reward achievements, address shortcomings, and hold accountable individuals and organizations that fail to fulfill their responsibilities.

Additionally, Da Nang is committed to strictly following the directives of the city’s People’s Committee, the Government, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and the Supreme People’s Court regarding IUU control measures. The city must be well-prepared for the upcoming meeting with the European Commission’s fifth inspection team.

In November 2024, local authorities will conduct a peak patrol campaign to monitor, inspect, and handle fishing vessels that do not meet the required conditions for legal fishing activities. Violations will be dealt with strictly, and detailed reports will be submitted. Repeat offenses or serious violations will be addressed in accordance with Resolution No. 04/2024/NQ-HĐTP from the Supreme People’s Court.

For violations detected since the fourth inspection, the city will direct relevant authorities to review, investigate, verify, and address actions such as tampering with or disabling VMS equipment, crossing maritime boundaries, or engaging in illegal fishing activities in foreign waters. The city will also ensure the complete update of data on 44 unregistered vessels (“three-no” boats) into the national fisheries database.

Da Nang will also rigorously implement the certification of traceability for seafood through the eCDT electronic system, ensuring transparency and legality in the verification and certification process. This effort will help maintain the legitimacy and transparency of Vietnam’s seafood industry, particularly for exports to European markets.
