Ninh Binh cracks down on IUU fishing with new task force

Ninh Binh Province has launched a new task force to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, as part of Vietnam’s broader efforts to meet international standards and remove the European Commission’s “yellow card” warning on its seafood exports.

Under Decision No. 300/QD-UBND, the Provincial People’s Committee has formed a Steering Committee led by Vice Chairman Tran Anh Dung to coordinate anti-IUU activities across the province.

The committee is charged with enforcing fisheries regulations, restoring aquatic resources, and monitoring compliance with IUU prevention protocols. It will coordinate inspections, data collection, and reporting, and propose legal or administrative measures when needed.

The Department of Agriculture and Environment has been designated as the standing body of the committee, responsible for liaising with other local agencies and submitting progress reports to provincial leaders and the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.

Vietnamese law considers a range of violations under the scope of IUU fishing, including fishing without a license, operating in restricted zones or seasons, using banned gear, or obstructing investigations.

Vietnam has intensified its crackdown on IUU fishing since receiving the EU’s yellow card in 2017, which poses a risk to its multi-billion-dollar seafood exports to the European market. Provinces like Ninh Binh are now under pressure to step up monitoring, surveillance, and enforcement to align with international norms.
