China, including Hong Kong, is the most likely to become Vietnam’s largest market for pangasius next year, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).
China is one of the three largest importers of Vietnamese pangasius, along with the US and EU, according to Vo Hung Dung, deputy chairman and general secretary of the Viet Nam Pangasius Association. Pangasius exports to mainland China and Hong Kong recorded strong growth in the first ten months of the year hitting $235.5 million, a year-on-year surge of nearly 76 per cent.
As of September 2016, China has surpassed the EU as Vietnam’s second largest pangasius market. Currently the US remains the top importer of tra fish from Viet Nam, but high anti-dumping taxes and the US’s new catfish inspection program are barriers that will make it increasingly difficult for Vietnamese exporters.
“It is forecasted that pangasius exports to the U.S. market in 2017 will be not as high as that in 2016. It is also the reason for China to possibly become the largest market for Vietnamese pangasius in 2017,” the release said.
