VietGAP-standard crab farming presents new opportunities

VietGAP-standard crab farming in Ca Mau presents new developmental opportunities, delivering significant economic benefits to local residents while enhancing environmental conditions.

Starting in 2023, the Ca Mau Provincial Agricultural Extension Center initiated a project to establish the first VietGAP-standard crab farming area, covering 30 hectares and involving 15 households in Mỹ Bình Hamlet, Phú Tân Commune (Phú Tân District, Ca Mau Province).

Participants in this model receive 50% financial support from the Ca Mau Provincial Agricultural Extension Center for seeds and essential materials. They also receive guidance on crab farming techniques that meet VietGAP standards, along with support for fertilizers and microbial products.

According to the Ca Mau Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, this crab farming area is part of the local aquaculture development plan. Households involved must have land use rights and adhere to VietGAP standards.

Nearly a year into the pilot project, the VietGAP-standard crab farming model has shown promising results. With 3 hectares of water surface dedicated to crab farming, residents harvested over 350kg after 7 months, an increase of about 50kg compared to previous traditional methods. With an average of 3 crabs per kilogram and a selling price of 400,000 VND, the total revenue from the model has reached 140 million VND since the beginning of the year.
