VietShrimp 2025: Driving Vietnam’s shrimp industry toward sustainable development

Vietnam’s shrimp industry is on the verge of a major transformation as it confronts environmental challenges and embraces the path of sustainable growth.

At the heart of this evolution will be VietShrimp 2025, an international expo designed to foster the exchange of ideas and innovations aimed at steering the sector toward a more resilient and eco-friendly future.

An inevitable shift to sustainable practices

In 2023, Vietnam’s shrimp exports generated USD 4.3 billion, solidifying the industry’s role as a crucial pillar of the national economy. Yet, the global shrimp sector faces intensifying challenges from climate change, resource depletion, and increasingly stringent consumer demands for sustainable and eco-friendly products. These factors are pushing the industry toward a “green revolution”—an essential shift that aims to secure long-term sustainability.

This transition is no longer optional; it is now an essential trend in the global shrimp industry. Intensive and super-intensive shrimp farming practices, while driving production, contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, ranging from 9.3 to 12.5 kg of CO2 per kilogram of fresh shrimp, according to Associate Professor Vo Nam Son of Can Tho University. Additionally, waste from aquaculture exacerbates pollution in soil and water systems, intensifying the impacts of climate change.

Despite the hurdles, the green transition presents immense opportunities for Vietnam’s shrimp sector. Environmentally friendly shrimp products, especially those with international certifications like ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council), are gaining traction in global markets. These products command premium prices, ranging from 10% to 30% higher than conventional shrimp. According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), companies adopting sustainable farming models have reported revenue growth of 15-20%, highlighting the economic potential of embracing green practices.

Alongside production shifts, technological advancements are playing a pivotal role. The adoption of circular farming systems, advanced wastewater treatment technologies, and energy-efficient solutions has become widespread. Over 500 shrimp farms in Vietnam have integrated high-tech solutions, resulting in a 30% reduction in water usage and a 20% decrease in electricity consumption. These innovations not only reduce environmental impacts but also optimize production costs, improving profitability.

A long but promising journey

While these advancements are commendable, the green transition in Vietnam’s shrimp industry is still in its early stages, and challenges remain. The successful transformation of the sector will require concerted efforts from the government, businesses, and shrimp farmers alike. Experts suggest that supportive policies are crucial to encouraging investment in green technologies. At the same time, raising awareness among shrimp farmers about the long-term economic and environmental benefits of sustainable farming models is essential.

This collective effort will provide the shrimp industry with the momentum it needs to grow sustainably and secure its future in a rapidly changing global market.

Over nearly a decade, the VietShrimp Aquaculture International Fair has become a cornerstone event, driving the sustainable growth of Vietnam’s shrimp industry. More than just a showcase of cutting-edge technologies, VietShrimp serves as a vital hub for connecting businesses, researchers, and shrimp farmers, enhancing collaboration and sharing knowledge that helps elevate Vietnam’s shrimp industry on the global stage.

VietShrimp 2025 is an unmissable opportunity for industry stakeholders to learn from domestic and international experts, explore the latest trends, and adopt advanced technologies. Participants will gain invaluable insights into improving their competitiveness while contributing to the sustainable development of the industry.

The event is scheduled to take place from March 26-28, 2025, at the Can Tho Investment Promotion and Exhibition Center (108A Le Loi, Cai Khe Ward, Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City).
