Catching Northern fish during Tet

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has urged coastal areas to quickly share information and encourage fishermen to continue catching northern fish species during the Lunar New Year for a successful harvest.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has issued Document No. 49/BNN-TS, directing the People’s Committees of coastal provinces and cities to monitor fishing vessel activities and provide support, visits, and encouragement to fishermen at sea during the 2025 Lunar New Year.

MARD highlights that in 2024, the fisheries industry faced significant challenges due to abnormal weather, including the effects of 10 storms and several tropical depressions at sea, with Storm No. 3 (Yagi) causing considerable damage. Moreover, maritime disputes have become more complex, with numerous unpredictable and unstable factors. The European Commission’s “yellow card” warning has also directly affected the production and business of the country’s seafood industry.

With the close attention and guidance of the Government, the Prime Minister, central ministries and agencies, local authorities, political-social organizations, and the determination of fishermen, the fisheries sector in 2024 has maintained stable, effective, and sustainable production. The total seafood output for 2024 is estimated at 9.6 million tons, a 2% increase from 2023, with 3.86 million tons from fisheries, up 0.6%. Seafood exports are expected to surpass 10 billion USD, a 12.1% increase compared to 2023.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reports that the 2024-2025 Northern fishery season is in full swing, coinciding with high seafood demand for the Lunar New Year (Tet). Many fishing vessels and fishermen will remain at sea during the Tet holiday, continuing production across coastal regions. This effort supports the economy while contributing to the protection of national sovereignty and maritime security.

To promptly support the spirits of fishermen facing difficulties and the families of those involved in offshore seafood exploitation during the Lunar New Year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has urged coastal provinces and cities to direct relevant authorities to closely monitor weather conditions and fishing activities. This will ensure timely assistance to fishermen, enabling them to focus on safe and productive operations.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) requests coastal localities to compile a list of fishing vessels and fishermen involved in offshore fishing activities during the Lunar New Year holiday. The list must be submitted to MARD (via D-Fisheries at thangnt.tcts@mard.gov.vn) by January 23, 2025. After the holiday, the list should be submitted by February 2, 2025, for inclusion in a report to the Prime Minister.
