Skretting Vietnam and Entobel announce partnership to advance sustainable shrimp feed production

Skretting Vietnam and Entobel have announced a strategic partnership that will see insect protein meal (H-Meal) incorporated into Skretting’s commercial shrimp feed. The objective is twofold: to increase flexibility in feed formulation reducing dependency of marine ingredients while offering lower-carbon, responsibly sourced feeds to shrimp farmers in Vietnam and beyond.

This collaboration marks one of the first large-scale shrimp–insect meal integrations in Asia and represents the first commercial shrimp feed with insect meal in Vietnam, underscoring both companies’ shared vision to advance sustainability and circularity in aquaculture.

“By integrating insect meal into our shrimp feeds, we are taking another strong step towards building a more sustainable aquaculture value chain,” said Duco Onnes, General Manager of Nutreco Vietnam. “

‘This partnership with Entobel allows us to deliver high-performance nutrition to our customers in a way that is better for the environment’

Insect meals bring measurable sustainability gains to aquaculture. Verified through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), they offer a low-carbon profile—currently just above 1 kg CO₂/kg and moving toward the <1 kg target—while fully aligned with WWF’s Basket Blueprint (https://www.wwf.org.uk/basket-blueprint). By converting food by-products into high-value nutrition, this ingredient reduces waste and marine resource dependency. Through Skretting’s integration into commercial feeds, the collaboration delivers real-world impact: lower FFDR, supports good growth performance when used as part of a balanced diet, and builds a more resilient value chain for farmers and global markets.

“We are proud to partner with Skretting to prove that sustainability and performance can go hand in hand,” said Alexandre de Caters, Co-founder of Entobel. “Together, we are showing how circular innovation can reduce ocean pressure and strengthen the food value chain.”

Skretting’s trials confirmed that insect meals deliver consistent growth performance, feed efficiency, and nutritional values comparable to traditional marine-based ingredients. In addition, internal research has highlighted that they may provide supportive functional effects, thanks to naturally occurring bioactive components—including chitin and lauric acid—which play important roles in aquafeeds.

Commercial production of shrimp feed containing H-Meal began in November 2025, with potential expansion into other species and markets under exploration.

This partnership reflects Skretting’s global commitment to innovation and sustainability – – turning scientific progress into real, measurable impact across the aquaculture value chain.
